Do or Die by Papa Roach

Today I saw my hero fall apart, The one who taught me to be strong, On the outside I look fine, But on the inside I am dying My strength has overcome my pain My love for you remains the same The loneliness is setting in I have no one to free my sins It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's do or die It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's your to mine Now it's my time to help you out, Coz you were there when I was down, It's hard for me to seal this way Losing all your sanity You helped me, keep my dreams alive , Without you how would I survive It's time for me to be a man Now I finally understand It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's do or die It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's your to mine It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's do or die It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's your to mine [Do Or Die lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]I cant run anymore I cant hide anymore I cant run anymore I cant hide anymore Today I saw my hero fall apart, The one who taught me to be strong, On the outside I look fine, But on the inside I am dying It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's do or die It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's your to mine It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's do or die It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's your to mine It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's do or die It's never too late to live your life, The time is now, it's your to mine I cant run anymore I cant hide anymore I cant run anymore I cant hide anymore Yeaaaahh

kafka

After watching the film, Kafka, my perspective of metamorphosis didn’t really change at all. I thought it was an overall good movie but in the end didn’t affect me about the book. It did however make me think a little deeper into the story. I though about humanity how people are and how the story in my opinion wasn’t about Gregor necessarily. It was more about people’s fear of the unknown and the way people react to drastic changes within their lives, wether personal or in the world around them. When it comes to people, in general I think change is a very bad thing because if enough people think or react the same way then a lot of others will follow and it will be nothing but mass chaos except for the few people who have grip on what is actually happening. what do you think is the "moral of the story"?
I am assuming that the moral of the story is to look at everything a little deeper than what everything may seem so that one can understand in full what is or isn’t really happening. Also, it has to do with the love a family, your family and any other family that you may have wether it is a friend that might as well be family or a mother or father. Your connection with them is vital in life because if you don’t have a relationship with them then one can’t have a relationship at all, for they are the people that teach you about love and compassion, and without it you turn to anger and rage. Sometimes that anger and rage ultimately leads to ones suicide weather it be taking your own life or social suicide, which would be to become a hermit, (or a bug) so to speak. Humanity is the big picture that is seen in the book because everyone who knows or looks at Gregor is repulsed and wants nothing to do with him. This can be related to African Americans, or people of color if you will. Before the modern ages of factories and civil rights that is exactly how people of color were seen. They were seen as disgusting and revolting, not even worth the air that they were breathing, but in the end everyone finds out what life means and knows that everyone even a bug is a living creature who deserves everything that everyone else may have. In my personal opinion we are equal in everyway except for the looks. If we were all blind and couldn’t see, what do you think life would have been like? Or even if we only saw shapes and no colors or sizes? That is the question.

Why the future doesn't need us

Bill Joy's thesis is that we are becoming too advanced and are trying to make things easier but at the same time we are digging our graves. We create these spectacular machines that can do all sorts of things for us, in turn creating devolution. We want these robots to do everything for us so we can sit around being lazy which is making people fat, lazy, and unmotivated. If you look back to when we didn't have computers or even cars for that matter; how many people were obese? It's because they got up and worked for a good portion of our lives.
The human race can avoid becoming obsolete by creating devices that can do everything we don't want to but the difference is that we still have to provide manual labor. It won't be as hard to accomplish the tasks at hand but, it will get done and possibly a lot better because there will be someone there that can fix any necessary problems. No matter which way it's thought about people are always going to be necessary for the future because the future needs the human race for there to be intelligent life on this planet.
I think Huxley would say something on the lines of that is exactly what he was trying to get at with "Brave New World". He would either say that or he would completely disagree with it or argue until no end. It's basically a different version of BNW there a just a few differences that you can easily connect to one another.

Harrison Bergeron

Kurt Vonnegut is trying to tell us that we are becoming too advanced and eventually our world will be similar to what he has described in his short story, Harrison Bergeron. This story argues that eventually we will not be free that there will be so many laws every way we turn to stop us from doing anything we want to. It also argues that if we believe what ever the government tells us then we are for sure doomed. Most of the theme is despair and joy. It is despair because of the communist government that has been established making everyone miserable. Joy, because it ends and there will be a new free government. Not exactly because a little of this was fantasy. It doesn’t need to be because it all balances out with certain scenes in the story. It is told in first person. It would be like if you were the narrator and in the story telling someone else. Because now you can be involved in the story and you can imagine what it would be like and it’s not so boring. Two sympathetic critics of Vonnegut’s work, Karen and Charles Wood, have said of his stories. The two main characters that are mostly talked about in this story are surrounded by all kinds of technology and yet are held back by all sorts of things. The man is really smart but wears an earpiece to keep him from thinking.

"The Ones Who Walked Away From Omelas"

The piece, in my opinion was very odd; it wasn't the worst image that I have received from a book or any reading for that matter. Although it was somewhat disturbing when people would lock up one person make him miserable so that they can all be happy. After I read a little bit more I came to relies the people weren't all psychopaths when people came to see this boy in what I envision to be closet of some kind. Some of the people would go see him and they would cry and become curious, and sometimes they would even leave the town or not come out of their own home for multiple days. In the end it made me think about our society and the way things are and now I think it may have done me some good.

In terms of 1984 it's almost like when people get taken away by the thought police. Everyone knows where they go and what happens to them. The only things they don't know are the details of what goes on in the ministry of truth. They would like to do something about it but they can't because they know that they will succumb to the same fate as the person before them. Winston would have to be one of the people that came to visit the little boy and then go home to cry for a couple of days. I think this would be his character because in "1984" he wants to leave and be without what he has seen and known about for his entire life.

Why were the people so selfish as to keep a boy locked up in a closet for their own good? Where would Winston fit in, in this story? What are the differences between the two? Why would some of the people leave their own happy lives and leave town because of the boy? Why would people go back, time after time to see this young boy?

3 Top

The three colleges I want to go to is 1.Schoolcraft 2.wayne state 3.UofM I really hope i can get at least a 3.3 this year. I also want to get a 4 on the AP test.

Robot dreams

Some similarities that I noticed between "1984" and "Robot Dreams" are that the robot is told what he can and can not do. Winston and the robot are one in the same where they defy the rules and do what they want instead of falling under the status quo. A difference is that the so called "government" in "Robot Dreams" isn't as harsh until he gets to out of control, as in "1984" Winston gets much further in defying Big Brother. I think they would have a very interesting conversation consisting of many things, like politics and the future. For example in the future they may agree that the countries we know today will not exist and become one giant super power. Then again, I think they would argue about who would run the world how it would be ran.

What is Watts' thesis? Just what should a young man or woman know in order to be "in the know"? Is there in other words, some inside information, some special taboo, some real lowdown on life an existance that most parents and teachers either don't know or won't tell?

What is his view of religion? He thinks thay are all the same with some sort of taboo that will eventually be regular everyday talk amongst the citezins of the world.

What does Watts see as the problem with the concept of "conquering" nature? To conquer nature you must conqure that universe which in it self means you muct conquer yourself because you and I are all one and not one seperate being.

How does Watts define the "new experience"? A new feeling of what it is to be "I" (p. 11)

What does Watts see as the purpose of myths?A way to understand life.

How does Watts think someone finds his/her true identity?Draw a connection between this reading and 1984 and/or the song, "2+2 = 5." Cite specific passages to support your claim. In 1984 he is part of a bigger being weather he wants to belive it or not. Soime may say the party or the world or anything outside of london, but the fact of the matter is, he is a small part of it. What he does, doesn't matter at all because he doesn't move the people the people move him. Watts says that what we do is just a ripple in the universe that we can't see and that we don't matter, and it is the same thing in 1984. No matter what one person does, it will not change the fact that big brother rules everything and will have his way with your country.

A Final Farewell

First of all, I would like to thank you for being a part of this mentor program. It has helped me in so many ways such as; giving me more confidence in my school work, inspiration to strive for sucsess, and more of an interest in english literature. I believe that I can do much better than I am and could get an all "A" average. As a matter fo fact I think anyone could, they just have to simply stop being lazy like I used to be. Now if I pick up a book, I can't seem to put it down at night untill I get to tired to keep my vision from fading away.
This summer I will hopefully be getting a better job at costco making $11 an hour wich is good for someone at the age of 17. I'm planning on going up north on Memorial day weekend for four days. I want to go fishing, have a camp fire, sleep in a hamock, and hopefully just hang out with my friends while I am up at St.Helen. also I plan to hang out with my girlfriend as long as possible. This friday on the 11th we will have been together for an entire year.
My junior year hasn't been all that great just becasue of making the mistake of being lazy and not turning in work, sleeping in class, and having a bad attitude. Other than that it was a great year; I met a bunch of new people, learned some cool and interesting things, and gained a lot of wisdom from the many teachers I have encounterd. I'm also planning on taking all that wisdom with me through college and the rest of my life to help me along the hard time ahead.
In the next school year I am planning on doing all my work to the best of my abilities even if I have to get extra toutoring some someone else. Also in the next year I will be duel enrolling into an image processing class in the second semester.
Again thankyou for corresponding with me through this second semester of my junior year and I appreciate every bit of what you have said to me. If I can I will keep corresponding over the summer with this blog just see whats been going on, if it's alright with you.

What can I do to get what I want?

Dear Mr. Jim hughes,

It certainly has been a while since the last time we posted in class, due to the ACT testing and all that fun stuff. I still do have a general plan of going to college for psychology and now photography on the side. Although teaching has crossed my mind in the past few months because some teachers that I have and/or have had really haven't been all that good. I can't exactly explain it all that well but I think you may get an idea of what i'm saying. I'll probably end up going to Schoolcraft college for my first two years and then hopefully transfer to Wayne state or UOFM.
In the past school year I havn't exactly worked to my full potential and this semester i'm planning on getting an all A average. The first thing I am doing to ensure an all A average is writing everything we do in all my classes in my planner and getting it signed by each of my teachers to show my parents what exactly is being done. This will help me do my homework and keep track of study habits. Having the teachers sign my planner shows my parents that I can be trusted with the responsibilities I have been given.
Another thing that I will be doing is going straight home after school to do my homework. I would do this if I don't have to work at 3:00 during the weekdays. If I do my homework right when I get home I will have a better chance of completing it with no problem because I havn't spent that whole day wasteing my time with friends and nonsense.
Third, i'm going to try and pay attention more during class instead of day dreaming about what I would like to do after I get out of school. I will deffinitly have to go to bed a lot sooner then I have been. Usually the time I decide to do that is about 11:00 P.M. To me that is goping to be a big change becasue i stay up to watch the news and maybe treat myself to some desert eventhough I know it's not exactly good for me.
If I have to I will stay after school to get the extra help from any teacher that is willing to spend the extra time with me. In some subjects like chemistry I stay after and come early all the time and still don't get the grade I want. Do you have any ideas on how to bring up that grade eventhough iv been trying and trying but still can't understand what i'm doing?
The last thing I know that I will have to do is not fall asleep in class. It hasn't happend much lately especially in english becasue I love the book that we are reading called "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut. and the funny thing is that in his other books he has written he makes connections. Connections like with the aliens in "SH5" they are in another book of his.....wow, I forgot the title of it, sorry about that.
What did you do your Junior year to accomplish your goals? What do you think I can do to help myself with my goals? Thank you for your time and I hope you have a good time untill our next post. "Farewll, Hello, Farewell, Hello"~Billy Pilgrim

Dear Mr. Jim Hughes,

As you may or may not already know, this post will be dealing with the subject of senseless violence. In my opinion I believe that greed will drive someone or maybe anyone to senseless violence. If someone wants something bad enough that they will risk their life for it, it will evidently lead to violence. In what happened in Detroit was out of the question illegal. Besides the fact that people got killed, it’s the fact that they were using and dealing drugs. In my opinion everything leads to greed if you think about it hard enough. If you love someone it may lead to suspicion, the jealousy, and in the end it will turn to greed. I believe it is how people are raised weather or not they have the ability to kill someone. If you are raised with the teachings of religion and that taking someone’s life is barbaric then there is a very high chance that you won’t be able to succumb to that way of life. On the other hand if you are taught that killing someone is a good thing then you will do it, and you will be put in jail for the rest of your life.

I was appalled by what happened in Detroit with the two little boys. I don’t even know what could make someone shoot two boys that are barely teenagers and had barely a chance to live or experience the real world where surprisingly there are more nice people than I originally thought. When I herd about what happened it made me confused. It made me confused because I would never do that over a few dollars that I would rather earn in a legitimate, honorable job. I would rather be respected for my hard work then being respected for the ability for pulling a trigger.

A lot of music now has more violence than we think. It actually took me a little time to think about it all. To think, that most of the music that is on the radio is about hurting someone over such trivial things. It makes me realize how important the people in me life are. It’s actually kind of pathetic takes something of senseless violence to realize that. Another sad thing is that people are excited by violence. In movies like The God Father, in games like Grand Theft Auto, and music like 50 cents, “Get Rich or Die Trying.” It affects us all really, and again it’s really sad if you think about it. Children are even more influenced by it because they are being introduced to it at such a young age and for so long.

I believe that people have the right to protect themselves in any way if they are in threat of being harmed or killed. Parents should put their children in self defense class. They should do this because if a “bully” of some sort starts to pick on them and threatens to beat them up, then they should be able to defend themselves. Parents should also be teaching their children more about violence then the television. What I mean is that parents should teach them that it is wrong and shouldn’t be done, and to try and stop their kids from watching violent television.

Jim, what do you think about this subject? This isn’t part of the assignment but have you read “slaughterhouse-five”? if so then what did you think of it?

Sorry

Dear Mr. Jim Hughes,

I am terribly sorry have not posted what was assigned to us over break. I don't know exactly why i forgot to post but, I do have a job that i work 4 days a week. More then likely I just got caught up in the holidays and some family issues i had to attend to. I know that we got another chance to post it, in all honesty it was my fault for not being responsible enough to do what was asked of me. Again I am very sorry.

Going a little bit back in time; my holiday break was fine except for a couple of family mishaps that I would rather not talk about. When you mentiond that it would be best for making a regular study time, I have a small problem. I work 4 days a week and two or three of them are during the weekdays. I don't know a solution to my problem and was woundering if you knew what or if i could do anything about it. I beleive that everything happens for a reason and what ever happens, happens. By the way, how was your holiday season?

Thank you once again for being in the mentor program and also sorry for not posting my assignment. Oh and this isn't an assignment or anything like that I just felt bad and didn't want to be rude or waste your time. Again, Thank you.
