What is Watts' thesis? Just what should a young man or woman know in order to be "in the know"? Is there in other words, some inside information, some special taboo, some real lowdown on life an existance that most parents and teachers either don't know or won't tell?
What is his view of religion? He thinks thay are all the same with some sort of taboo that will eventually be regular everyday talk amongst the citezins of the world.
What does Watts see as the problem with the concept of "conquering" nature? To conquer nature you must conqure that universe which in it self means you muct conquer yourself because you and I are all one and not one seperate being.
How does Watts define the "new experience"? A new feeling of what it is to be "I" (p. 11)
What does Watts see as the purpose of myths?A way to understand life.
How does Watts think someone finds his/her true identity?Draw a connection between this reading and 1984 and/or the song, "2+2 = 5." Cite specific passages to support your claim. In 1984 he is part of a bigger being weather he wants to belive it or not. Soime may say the party or the world or anything outside of london, but the fact of the matter is, he is a small part of it. What he does, doesn't matter at all because he doesn't move the people the people move him. Watts says that what we do is just a ripple in the universe that we can't see and that we don't matter, and it is the same thing in 1984. No matter what one person does, it will not change the fact that big brother rules everything and will have his way with your country.

A Final Farewell
First of all, I would like to thank you for being a part of this mentor program. It has helped me in so many ways such as; giving me more confidence in my school work, inspiration to strive for sucsess, and more of an interest in english literature. I believe that I can do much better than I am and could get an all "A" average. As a matter fo fact I think anyone could, they just have to simply stop being lazy like I used to be. Now if I pick up a book, I can't seem to put it down at night untill I get to tired to keep my vision from fading away.
This summer I will hopefully be getting a better job at costco making $11 an hour wich is good for someone at the age of 17. I'm planning on going up north on Memorial day weekend for four days. I want to go fishing, have a camp fire, sleep in a hamock, and hopefully just hang out with my friends while I am up at St.Helen. also I plan to hang out with my girlfriend as long as possible. This friday on the 11th we will have been together for an entire year.
My junior year hasn't been all that great just becasue of making the mistake of being lazy and not turning in work, sleeping in class, and having a bad attitude. Other than that it was a great year; I met a bunch of new people, learned some cool and interesting things, and gained a lot of wisdom from the many teachers I have encounterd. I'm also planning on taking all that wisdom with me through college and the rest of my life to help me along the hard time ahead.
In the next school year I am planning on doing all my work to the best of my abilities even if I have to get extra toutoring some someone else. Also in the next year I will be duel enrolling into an image processing class in the second semester.
Again thankyou for corresponding with me through this second semester of my junior year and I appreciate every bit of what you have said to me. If I can I will keep corresponding over the summer with this blog just see whats been going on, if it's alright with you.

What can I do to get what I want?
Dear Mr. Jim hughes,
It certainly has been a while since the last time we posted in class, due to the ACT testing and all that fun stuff. I still do have a general plan of going to college for psychology and now photography on the side. Although teaching has crossed my mind in the past few months because some teachers that I have and/or have had really haven't been all that good. I can't exactly explain it all that well but I think you may get an idea of what i'm saying. I'll probably end up going to Schoolcraft college for my first two years and then hopefully transfer to Wayne state or UOFM.
In the past school year I havn't exactly worked to my full potential and this semester i'm planning on getting an all A average. The first thing I am doing to ensure an all A average is writing everything we do in all my classes in my planner and getting it signed by each of my teachers to show my parents what exactly is being done. This will help me do my homework and keep track of study habits. Having the teachers sign my planner shows my parents that I can be trusted with the responsibilities I have been given.
Another thing that I will be doing is going straight home after school to do my homework. I would do this if I don't have to work at 3:00 during the weekdays. If I do my homework right when I get home I will have a better chance of completing it with no problem because I havn't spent that whole day wasteing my time with friends and nonsense.
Third, i'm going to try and pay attention more during class instead of day dreaming about what I would like to do after I get out of school. I will deffinitly have to go to bed a lot sooner then I have been. Usually the time I decide to do that is about 11:00 P.M. To me that is goping to be a big change becasue i stay up to watch the news and maybe treat myself to some desert eventhough I know it's not exactly good for me.
If I have to I will stay after school to get the extra help from any teacher that is willing to spend the extra time with me. In some subjects like chemistry I stay after and come early all the time and still don't get the grade I want. Do you have any ideas on how to bring up that grade eventhough iv been trying and trying but still can't understand what i'm doing?
The last thing I know that I will have to do is not fall asleep in class. It hasn't happend much lately especially in english becasue I love the book that we are reading called "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut. and the funny thing is that in his other books he has written he makes connections. Connections like with the aliens in "SH5" they are in another book of his.....wow, I forgot the title of it, sorry about that.
What did you do your Junior year to accomplish your goals? What do you think I can do to help myself with my goals? Thank you for your time and I hope you have a good time untill our next post. "Farewll, Hello, Farewell, Hello"~Billy Pilgrim

Dear Mr. Jim Hughes,
As you may or may not already know, this post will be dealing with the subject of senseless violence. In my opinion I believe that greed will drive someone or maybe anyone to senseless violence. If someone wants something bad enough that they will risk their life for it, it will evidently lead to violence. In what happened in Detroit was out of the question illegal. Besides the fact that people got killed, it’s the fact that they were using and dealing drugs. In my opinion everything leads to greed if you think about it hard enough. If you love someone it may lead to suspicion, the jealousy, and in the end it will turn to greed. I believe it is how people are raised weather or not they have the ability to kill someone. If you are raised with the teachings of religion and that taking someone’s life is barbaric then there is a very high chance that you won’t be able to succumb to that way of life. On the other hand if you are taught that killing someone is a good thing then you will do it, and you will be put in jail for the rest of your life.
I was appalled by what happened in Detroit with the two little boys. I don’t even know what could make someone shoot two boys that are barely teenagers and had barely a chance to live or experience the real world where surprisingly there are more nice people than I originally thought. When I herd about what happened it made me confused. It made me confused because I would never do that over a few dollars that I would rather earn in a legitimate, honorable job. I would rather be respected for my hard work then being respected for the ability for pulling a trigger.
A lot of music now has more violence than we think. It actually took me a little time to think about it all. To think, that most of the music that is on the radio is about hurting someone over such trivial things. It makes me realize how important the people in me life are. It’s actually kind of pathetic takes something of senseless violence to realize that. Another sad thing is that people are excited by violence. In movies like The God Father, in games like Grand Theft Auto, and music like 50 cents, “Get Rich or Die Trying.” It affects us all really, and again it’s really sad if you think about it. Children are even more influenced by it because they are being introduced to it at such a young age and for so long.
I believe that people have the right to protect themselves in any way if they are in threat of being harmed or killed. Parents should put their children in self defense class. They should do this because if a “bully” of some sort starts to pick on them and threatens to beat them up, then they should be able to defend themselves. Parents should also be teaching their children more about violence then the television. What I mean is that parents should teach them that it is wrong and shouldn’t be done, and to try and stop their kids from watching violent television.
Jim, what do you think about this subject? This isn’t part of the assignment but have you read “slaughterhouse-five”? if so then what did you think of it?

Sorry
Dear Mr. Jim Hughes,
I am terribly sorry have not posted what was assigned to us over break. I don't know exactly why i forgot to post but, I do have a job that i work 4 days a week. More then likely I just got caught up in the holidays and some family issues i had to attend to. I know that we got another chance to post it, in all honesty it was my fault for not being responsible enough to do what was asked of me. Again I am very sorry.
Going a little bit back in time; my holiday break was fine except for a couple of family mishaps that I would rather not talk about. When you mentiond that it would be best for making a regular study time, I have a small problem. I work 4 days a week and two or three of them are during the weekdays. I don't know a solution to my problem and was woundering if you knew what or if i could do anything about it. I beleive that everything happens for a reason and what ever happens, happens. By the way, how was your holiday season?
Thank you once again for being in the mentor program and also sorry for not posting my assignment. Oh and this isn't an assignment or anything like that I just felt bad and didn't want to be rude or waste your time. Again, Thank you.

Dear, Mr. Jim Hughes,
I believe that I am a person who has an open mind, can see both sides of an argument, and can decide what is right and wrong. The thing about reading is that I can only read for a certain amount of time without losing my focus. For example, "The Davinci Code" it was an epic non stop thriller; at least in my mind it was. When I do get to college I hope on majoring in psychology, and becasue of Dan Brown I want to enrole myself into philosphy class and other classes of that sort.
I absolutly love history, I believe that history is very important to our culture to know where we came from and how it got to be. Me for example, my great grandfather came to America from Italy in 1913 and then settled in Southfield, MI. That was on my mothers side of the family. I couldn't really tell you about my fathers side is for the simple fact that he was addopted and we have yet been unable to uncover anything about his biological parents.
I do have a question for you. Would you happen to have a way that makes it easy to study for you? I have tried many different ways to study and take notes and so far nothing has really worked out. I really hope you can help, and I really hope that I can finally aquire a way to help study for the upcoming midterm exams.
Thanks again,
Anthony Boyd
